On September 24th, 2012, Research Fellow Li Ji, Deputy Director of No. 12 Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (No. 12 Research Institute of CETC) and Research Fellow Shao Wensheng, Chief of Cathode Electronics Research Department, No. 12 Research Institute of CETC came to IECAS to make academic exchange and speeches on the invitation of Research and Development Center of Space Traveling-Wave Tubes (No. 3 Research Department) of IECAS. Wang Gang, Deputy Chief of No. 3 Research Department presided over the seminar, and Zhang Guoqing, Deputy Director of IECAS attended the seminar and made a speech.

Firstly, Research Fellow Li Ji made a keynote speech titled “Scandate Dispenser Cathodes and Abnormal Schottky Effect”, to introduce the research work in the fields related to two novel scandate dispenser cathodes, i.e., sub-micron scandate dispenser cathode, and novel scandate cathode with tungsten film coating, and to elaborate the emission mechanism of scandate cathodes. In respect of research on the novel scandate dispenser cathodes, he described in detail the process preparation methods for these two novel scandate dispenser cathodes, i.e., sub-micron scandate dispenser cathode, and novel scandate cathode with tungsten film coating, and the research work on the microstructure and appearance of these two cathodes, on the diode test and electron gun test for electron-emitting performance, and on the cathode emission uniformity, and introduced research methods for cathode emission non-uniformity; as for the emission mechanism of scandate dispenser cathodes, he carefully explained the uniform emission system in scandate dispenser cathodes and the Miram curve and PWFD of practical hot cathodes, and how to seek the essence of abnormal Schottky effect of scandate dispenser cathodes via “field assistant hot-electron emission” and “semiconductor–single atomic layer superposition” models.

Afterwards, Research Fellow Shao Wensheng made an academic speech titled “Overview of Cathode Materials for Microwave Tubes”, to expound several common materials of hot cathode for microwave tubes. He introduced the work on preparation of superfine tungsten powder with the “sol-gel” method and the engineering manufacturing process with tungsten-base, specially explained the “Peltier Effect” at hot filament connections. Finally, Research Fellow Shao summed up the progress of research in the Cathode Electronics Research Department in the recent years.

After the speeches, these two research fellows made interactive exchange with the employees and undergraduate students of IECAS on relevant contents at this seminar and the focus questions about development of long-life cathodes; with active atmosphere and thorough exchange at the interaction site .

Research Fellow Li Ji has been engaged in the study of cathode electronics for a long time, and has taken charge of research of multiple topics successively. He has published many papers in academic conference proceedings and journals at home and abroad and has had two invention patents. He has won over 10 National Defense Science and Technology Achievement Awards and CETC Science and Technology Achievement Awards.

Research Fellow Shao Wensheng graduated from Department of Electronic Engineering, Xi’an Jiaotong University, with a major in physical electronic technology and obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree in 1992, and joined the work in No. 12 Research Institute of CETC in the same year; he obtained his Master of Engineering degree from Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University with a major in electronics and communication engineering in 2007. He has been engaged in the study of cathode electronics for a long time, and has taken charge of and taken part in multiple national defense scientific research projects successively. He has won multiple National Defense Science and Technology Achievement Awards and CETC Science and Technology Achievement Awards.
