At the invitation of Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Radiation and Detection Technology (No.10 Laboratory), Researchers John C. Foster and Shun-Rong Zhang from Haystack Observatory of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) came to the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS) for exchange visit in the morning of October 16, carrying out in-depth communication with IECAS researchers in terms of radio observation.

During the visit, Researcher John C. Foster made an academic report titled “Radio Observation and Study at MIT Haystack Observatory” to introduce several different methods of radio observation, along with the research areas, equipment and results of MIT Haystack Observatory. The inspirited report lasted for more than one hour, at which the audience asked questions actively and discussed with John on the specific issues in the report.

Upon the completion of the report, Fang Guangyou, member of the CPC Party Committee and head of No.10 Laboratory, accompanied John C. Foster and Shun-Rong Zhang to visit the Laboratory and introduced the relevant programs and research areas of the No.10 Laboratory. The two researchers were very interested in the scientific achievements made by the No.10 Laboratory and hoped that the cooperation between the both parties can be further extended.

This exchange visit enhanced the relationship between MIT Haystack Observatory and No.10 Laboratory, laying a solid foundation for the sustained cooperation between the two parties.

Researcher John C. Foster serves as the leader of Atmospheric Sciences Group, Millstone Hill Observatory and associate director of MIT Haystack Observatory, specializing in the physics study of magnetosphere, ionosphere and thermosphere.

Engaged in the researches of upper atmosphere (including ionosphere and thermosphere), researcher Shun-Rong Zhang has deep academic attainments and rich research experiences in terms of upper atmosphere structure, dynamic process, upper atmosphere model and simulation, together with the climatology, variability as well as long-term change and trend of upper atmosphere. He once received the National Award for Youth in Science and Technology of China, special government allowances granted by the State Council, and the Zeldovich Prize awarded by the International Committee on Space Research (COSPAR), as one of the internationally active scholars in such field.
