From Oct. 3rd to 24th, 2014, researchers from the Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Radiation and Sensing Technology, Institute of Electronics conducted field experiments on the time-frequency domain electromagnetic data acquisition system which they developed in the Gurbantunggut Desert, central Junggar Basin, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. This marks China’s first set of productive field experiments using this domestically developed time-frequency domain electromagnetic data acquisition system.

The Gurbantunggut Desert during October is generally characterized by rampantly blowing sands and dry climate. The cold winds can drop the temperature quite drastically at night. Due to the fact that the operating radium reaches up to several tens of kilometers, in the past the team workers have stayed in tents for the convenience of operation. They began work 90 minutes before sunrise every morning, and returned to the tent station after sunset. After enduring various difficulties, they successfully completed the test mission by closely cooperating with field exploration workers from the Bureau of Geophysical Prospecting Inc., China National Petroleum Corporation. Moreover, the researchers exhibited good spirits of the researchers from the Chinese Academy of Science.

The time-frequency domain electromagnetic method is typically used for hydrocarbon exploration, by means of detecting the electrical properties or electrochemical anomalies of hydrocarbon reservoirs. This method exhibits incomparable advantages over other non-seismic methods, not only in terms of investigating the favorable ranges of oils and gases, but also assessing the boundary of the known hydrocarbon reservoirs and predicting the hydrocarbon contents surrounding the reservoirs in detection zones. The time-frequency domain electromagnetic method is currently a significant geophysical method of large-scale hydrocarbon explorations. Due to the fact that related independent research and development are still non-existent in China, in the past usage of this exploration instrument has been monopolized by companies from other countries. Under the support of the National Major Equipment Development Project Key Equipment Development for Deep Resource Exploration, researchers from the Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Radiation and Sensing Technology, Institute of Electronics, have tackled many technical problems, and have successfully developed a self-innovative networking time-frequency domain electromagnetic data acquisition system with independent intellectual property rights in China, which can satisfy the requirements of field productions.

We also conducted a full test on this networking time-frequency domain electromagnetic data acquisition system. The results indicate that several technical and performance indices are superior to the other similar foreign instruments. The Institute of Electronics and Bureau of Geophysical Prospecting Inc., China National Petroleum Corporation all express great expectations of this system in further practical productions.
