At the invitation of the National Key Lab of Microwave Imaging Technology, IECAS, physical oceanographer Zheng Quanan from the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, University of Maryland (UMD) and Dr. Zhao Qing from East China Normal University (ECNU) visited IECAS for an academic exchange on November 9, 2011. During the exchange, Zhao made an academic presentation on “Research on Applications of InSAR in Surface Stability Monitoring in Super-large Coastal Cities”, introducing the applications of DinSAR in urban surface settlement, and taking Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong for example to introduce distribution and rates of surface settlement in super-large cities in recent years; Zheng made a presentation on “Ocean Sub-mesoscale Dynamics from Satellite SAR Images”, elaborating on production mechanisms of sub-mesoscale ocean phenomena such as ocean internal waves, jet flow, vortex street and submarine topography as well as their representations on SAR images, thus offering the audience a deep understanding of marine applications of SAR images and enlightening them greatly. Many staff and postgraduates of IECAS and IRSA attended the exchange and had heated discussions with Zheng and Zhao.

Zheng graduated from the Department of Physics of Jilin University in 1966 and won a degree of doctor in physical oceanography from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) in 1987. He works as a senior researcher with the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, UMD and chief physical oceanographer of the First Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration (FIO). Also, he is visiting researcher of Columbia University, IOCAS, the Third Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration and the Department of Oceanography, Drilling Technology Research Institute, Shengli Petroleum Administration.

Zhao graduated as a doctor from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2010 and works as an instructor at the School of Resources and Environmental Science, ECNU. Now, he researches on satellite remote sensing and applications, has participated in research projects such as the fund project of the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, the innovation & technology fund project of Hong Kong, the research project of the Research Grants Council and 863 project “Interferometry Technology of ENVISAT ASAR in Topographic Mapping and Mapping and Analysis and Monitoring of Landslides”.
