“Development of 100MW klystron”, a national research project headed by IECAS researcher Wang Yong, was qualified through the acceptance test organized by the relevant national department on October 26, 2010, fulfilling the contracted task under the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” eight months earlier. The developed S-band klystron registers an output peak power of over 100MW, up to advanced world standards of similar devices in major technical indicators.
As a core device, high-power klystron is extensively used in great scientific engineering systems such as high-energy particle accelerator, free electron laser device and high-power radar. Due to a wide range of fields involved and a great number of key technical problems to be solved, the klystron is hard to develop. No countries but the US and Japan have developed klystrons with a high output power of 100MW.
