At the invitation of IEEE Circuits and System Society (ICSS), Yang Haigang, Director of Programmable Chip and System Research Center, attended its 2010 IEEE International Symposium on Circuit & Systems (hereinafter referred to as ISCAS2010) in Paris, France from May 30, 2010 to June 2. Director Yang held its Special Session “Emerging Technologies for Giga Scale FPGA” jointly with the overseas expert, Professor Wang Wei from Innovation Team, and read out his academic paper on current development and research trend of FPGA.

The ISCAS Symposium annually held by ICSS is one of the most influential international conferences in the field of solid-state circuits, winning wide attention from the academia and the industry. This Symposium has been successfully held more than 30 sessions so far, and each session has many participants of world-renowned scientists, entrepreneurs and industrial elite in this field, so it is a well-known industrial event in the field of solid-state circuits. During ISCAS annual symposium, a number of seminars will be held every year to aim at some branch in the field of solid-state circuits, study a number of cutting-edge topics that will occur in respect of such direction, or beyond the traditional thinking, explore the possible direction of development, provide a platform for exchange among experts for development of the next generation of technology, and jointly promote the sustainable development of such technology. This seminar held by our Research Center aiming at the development trend of FPGA technology is of this type of symposiums.

The International Partner Program of “Research on Programmable Chips and System Cutting-edge Technology” passed its feasibility argumentation jointly by Chinese Academy of Sciences and Innovation Team of National Overseas Experts Bureau in July 2008, its trial operation was officially launched in June 2009, during its running of more than one year, the overseas members from the Innovation Team have been working closely to carry out in-depth discussion and research and achieve more fruitful results, overseas experts have paid their visit more than 20 times, more than 30 times of lecture courses have been held, and three sessions of academic seminars have been organized. In order to enable the Innovation Team to step up the international stage, and create a team rich in innovative potential, vitality, and international influence, the symposium of ISCAS2010 on “Emerging Technologies for Giga Scale FPGA” (the next generation of Giga Scale FPGA Technology), which our Research Center took the lead to apply for, has eventually passed the assessment by all related organizations, and jointly chaired by Director Yang Haigang and Professor Wang Wei from New York State University, USA. Five overseas experts from International Partners Plan of Innovation Team introduced their research results concerning the latest cutting-edge FPGA technology, with the details as follows:

Researcher Yang Haigang, Institute of Electronics of Chinese Academy of Sciences (referred to as CAS Electronics): Overview: Emerging Technologies on Giga-Scale FPGA Application (the application of next-generation Giga Scale FPGA), which is the leading thematic speech of this Symposium;

Professor Wang Wei, New York State University, USA: CNT Emerging Memory-Based FPGA;

Professor Shi Chuanjin, University of Washington, USA: Mixed-Signal System-on-Chip Verification Using a Recursively-Verifying-Modeling Methodology;

Professor Shang Delong, Newcastle University of the UK: Asynchronous FPGA Architecture with Distributed Control;

Professor Hu Zhirun, University of Manchester, UK: 60GHz meta-material wideband antenna for FPGA Giga bit data transmission.

The successful bid to host this Symposium shows that our institute boasts some influence in international academic status. This academic exchange has opened a window for the world to understand our institute, and further strengthened our fame throughout the world; simultaneously, we have had in-depth and extensive exchanges with our overseas counterparts, closely kept pace with the international scientific research level, understood the status and development trends of the FPGA application technology in developed countries, better understood the gap between China’s development level and that of developed countries, clarified the direction of next-generation FPGA technology development in China, achieved mutual understanding, right positioned our institute, expanded our research ideas, inspired our academic thinking and guided our institute to carry our scientific research, international exchanges and talent introduction.

In addition, this visit has also provided the overseas members of the Innovation Team with an opportunity to carry out face-to-face exchanges of cooperation and thematic research, which can facilitate the establishment of a long-term international partnership, promote the development of the Innovation Team, thus publish higher-level papers in international academic journals, and thereby enhance the capacity of our institute for independent innovation and international competitiveness in the field of FPGA.
